Interiors, Custom Furniture & Lighting
Originally constructed in 1929, Singapore’s Capitol Theater and its surrounding structures (including the Capitol Building and Stamford House) were transformed into a multi-use complex including hotel, restaurant/bar, retail and more. For the prime corner of the Stamford house property, AvroKO was brought on to design the signature restaurant concept, 15 Stamford. Conceptually, the aim was to celebrate the beautiful colonial building which houses the restaurant while blending in an Asian sensibility. Overall, the interiors are very light and airy, with classic European colonial detailing found in the archways, columns, bar and wrought iron screens. The natural walls in the side dining rooms are bamboo caning. Eclectic, Asian inspired details familiar with the Singaporean community are found throughout, from sleek wooden slat screen dividers and doors in the central dining room to more minimalist woven grass wall coverings in the PDR. Custom designed decorative lighting subtly evokes Asian lanterns and other lighting devices. While the design team pulled detailing from the past – including select Chinese antiques and vases that add flavor and color and a sense of place throughout – the space is overall quite modern with beautiful polished stone (travertine floors, marble kitchen bar tops) and rich, supple leather furnishings.
