About

Centara Reserve is a contemporary beach resort located on the island of Samui in the Gulf of Thailand.

The overarching design concept pulls inspiration from both the existing colonial envelope as well as from the traditional craft of decorative Thai wood carving. The wood carving is brought into a contemporary context with simplified silhouettes and geometric forms. An unexpected layer that also pervades throughout is a sense of defying gravity, with sculptural elements that appear to be simultaneously light and heavy.

Elevated Arrival

At the arrival, an elevated runway draws guests into the dramatic and light-filled lobby.

Two columns at the end of the runway perfectly frame a dramatic, tiered chandelier that hovers in the middle of the lobby space. The chandelier has sculpted wood arms, reminiscent of Thai vernacular details, but is juxtaposed with cleaner metalwork joinery and a modern overall form.

The Gin Bar

To the right of the lobby lies the Gin Bar. Enclosed in a rotunda, its architecture is reminiscent of a grand sunroom one might find in a colonial estate. The interior, however, is very much a departure from anything traditional, with a bold blue, gray and white terrazzo floor, and a sculptural bar. The design concept merges detailing from historical apothecaries with geometric forms extracted from traditional Thai indigo textiles.

The Suite Life

The suites take the concept of wood carving to the next level with an undulating screen separating the bathroom from the bedroom that serves as both a minibar on one side and a closet on the other.

Strategically placed pavilions and thresholds create dynamic framing devices and capture the dichotomy between ocean and pool bodies.

The overall color palette of the guestrooms is soft and neutral with warm white plaster, white-washed oak, White Venus and Supergenti marbles, antique bronze metalwork details, and textured off-white upholstery with accents in burnt orange and olive green.
