About
Located on the 19th floor of the Rosewood Hotel in Bangkok, Nan Bei, meaning South and North respectively in Mandarin, is a luxurious, contemporary Chinese dining experience backdropped by an exhilarating view of the Bangkok skyline.
Sonia Cheng, CEO of New World Development and Rosewood Hotels, tasked us with creating a refreshingly modern and forward-thinking expression of the Chinese restaurant befitting a new generation of diners and in sync with the progressive and artful mission of the Rosewood Hotel brand evolution. We were entrusted to deftly navigate the delicate balance between the importance of authentic Chinese tradition and the appetite for innovation. Nan Bei propelled Chinese fine dining forward and the result has been overwhelmingly embraced.

Concept Narrative
The Chinese Legend of the 'Weaver Girl and the Cowherd'
The interior design takes inspiration from the Chinese legend of the "Weaver Girl and the Cowherd." As legend has it, the Weaver Girl, who resided in heaven, came down to Earth and fell in love with the Cowherd. However, their love was forbidden, and they were only allowed to meet once a year by crossing the night sky over a bridge of magpies.

Mystical Materials
The bar and lounge showcase a monolithic blue rope woven chandelier, abstractly referencing the craft of the Weaver Girl. Dusty sage plaster walls contrast with densely patterned chair upholstery and supple saffron leather banquettes. Overhead pendant lights crafted from wood and rope also reference the shuttlecocks and weaving material of our tale’s heroine. Futuristic blue leather chairs anchor the dining tables, while a series of padded black leather portals frame the vistas to various rooms.

Private Dining
A series of serene private dining rooms with rich blue and green lacquered coffer ceilings complete the journey. Custom-designed Chinese motif wallpapers have whimsical custom mirror “lakes” layered atop, adding a beguiling reflection and relief texture to the scenic, nature-inspired walls. Lush carpeting lies underfoot, while custom brass and glass chandeliers anchor each room.
The Beauty of Contrast
Much like the wonderful tension between old and new, Nan Bei’s restrooms spark with the crisp contrast of materials and color. A chic lounge occupies a generous area upon entering. A leather-tufted ottoman sits beneath a sharp black steel and brass chandelier. Marble clad walls and custom sconces add a touch of opulence and elevate the entire experience.
