Set amid Yunnan’s lush tea fields, the design of the Shangri-La Kunming draws inspiration from the narrative of a Yunnan tea plantation mansion - a refined retreat that celebrates the region’s natural splendor and tea heritage.

Drawing from Kunming’s “City of Eternal Spring” charm, the design blends contemporary elegance with local textures and artisanal details. The hotel interiors embrace seamless connections to nature, using marble, timber, and woven elements to echo tea plantations and traditional craft. Serene courtyards, tea terraces, and water features invite quiet reflection, while curated art and subtle motifs tell Yunnan’s story. The result is an authentic, tranquil sanctuary—immersing guests in a rich sensory journey through Yunnan’s landscapes, culture, and timeless tea rituals.

Rooted in Yunnan's Ancient Harvest

Yunnan is the cradle of tea. A land where Pu-erh has been pressed, traded, and revered for millennia. The design turns that heritage into the material: in the warmth of aged timber, the patience embedded in hand-woven textiles, and the ceremonial stillness of the tea terraces. Here, tea is both foundational and ornamental contributing to both the architecture and the atmosphere.

Horizon Lounge

Following check-in, guests can extend their arrival experience in the Horizon Lounge, a pavilion-inspired living room and dining room that radiates tranquility and understated luxury.

Lush Landscapes

Guests are initially greeted by a Yunnan garden-inspired driveway, setting a tranquil tone. Slowly, the grand porte cochère emerges inspired by Kunming’s famed archways. The formal arrival features a stunning garden courtyard with stone pathways and vibrant greenery. The lobby becomes an elegant extension of the garden, adorned with textures and colors echoing Yunnan’s rich landscape.

SUMA Bar

The hotel's signature bar's design was inspired by the legendary explorations of Joseph Rock, the Austrian-American botanist and adventurer whose travels through Yunnan in the early 20th century gave rise to the myth of Shangri-La. Rock’s fascination with the region’s botany and ethnic cultures is reflected in the lounge’s curation, from indigenous motifs carved into timber panels to botanical engravings etched into bar surfaces and glassware.

The city of eternal spring

With the aim of creating an atmosphere of relaxed elegance and heartfelt harmony, the suites at Shangri-La Kunming are meant to be an immersive journey through the imagined tea merchant's mansion. Drawing from the ecosystems of Xishuangbanna to the mist-covered tea mountains, fresh botanical greens and soft floral blush tones give way to deeper, earthy hues reminiscent of aged Pu-erh tea. Textures and materials like woven bamboo, aged wood and clay finishes reflect this progression and ground the space in craftsmanship and tradition.

Botanical motifs - ranging from Yunnan camellias and roses to tropical foliage - are expressed through embroidery, wall treatments, and sculptural elements.
