About

Influenced by Asian restaurants of New York City in the 1980’s and the art scene that ran parallel to it, Twin Tails is a retro-future look into what the modern day Mr. Chow's might be.
The design pairs sleek finishes synonymous with the ‘80’s like burl wood, pink and amber mirror, seas of marble and glossy paint sheens, and then contrasts them against raw materials like terracotta and rattan in order to celebrate the juxtaposition of a Southeast Asian restaurant into an era of excess. Similar to restaurants of that era, art made by current artists like Jordy Kerwick and Melissa Monroe, who channel the neo-expressionism of artists of the ‘80s, is hung prominently throughout. The figuration and almost raw animalistic patterning continues from the art onto the furniture and light fixtures to complete the homage.

A Cultural Epicenter

Where the uptown establishment meets the downtown art scene.

The NYC dining scene in the 1980s became a clubhouse for the era's elite artists, celebrities, and fashion influencers, with Mr. Chow being the most prestigious restaurant of them all. Owner Michael Chow cultivated friendships with many of his artist patrons like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. Famously, Basquiat doodled on napkins, and a Warhol painting of Chow would become a permanent fixture.
