About

As Neiman Marcus’ signature restaurant in Hudson Yards, The Zodiac Room drew inspiration from a futuristic vision of Neiman Marcus’s own Fascinating Fortnight, a world famous celebration of international culture, cuisine and fashion.

The sophisticated but innovative narrative reinterprets classical inspirations from New Formalism through a modern lens, pioneering the local avant-garde spirit of The New York School’s poets, painters and creatives active in the 1950s.

A New Formalism Haven

The overall space was divided into three experiences which led the guest from the least formal and most animated to an enveloping and more classic dining room. The facade evoked elements of New Formalism while incorporating modern brass screens with perforated and laser-cut detailing — making the transition from retail store to restaurant in one elegant stroke.

The front dining room includes a central banquette running along the length of the room. Above are clusters of brass pendants which create a focal wash-of-illumination. Midnight blacks, lush purples and baby blues hint at the sublime transition of dusk till dawn, simultaneously exuding both a weight and airiness to the flowing architecture.

What’s Your Sign?

Astronomy and astrological mythology played a role in the naming, interiors and graphics. Gold-leafed, imagined constellations are crisply embossed in custom artworks as well as menus and collateral. Radial stone layouts in the flooring recall celestial and global mapping devices, while perforated screens create stippled mystery.
